Ams players to watch in NHL draft. Connell grad Andrewjeski transfers to Western

Connell High grad Emma Andrewjeski, who spent the past two seasons playing for the Brigham Young University softball team, has transferred to Western Washington University.

Andrewjeski played in 22 games for BYU. She hit .333 (9 for 27), had a double, home run, and 9 RBIs.

She’ll have two seasons of eligibility left at WWU.

In other WWU softball news, Kennewick High grad Amaya Davis was named honorable mention to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball all-conference team.

Davis, a sophomore, a third baseman, hit .301 and had 16 RBIs.

College offers

Connell senior-to-be Jackson Forsyth has received an offer to play college football for Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.

Hockey

We’re just a week away from the NHL Draft — June 28 and 29.

So keep an eye on a few Tri-City Americans players.

Goalie Tomas Suchanek is ranked ninth among North American goalies, while defenseman Lukas Dragicevic is ranked 18th among all North American skaters.

Deagan McMillan, a forward, is ranked 106th among North American skaters.

All three have great chances of being drafted — and highly.

Tri-City Americans general manager Bob Tory said there is no timeline this summer to hire Craig West’s replacement as radio play-by-play man.

“Obviously, there is no hurry until the middle of September,” said Tory. “There are a lot of guys that are interested in the job.”

West announced in April that he was stepping down as the Americans’ broadcaster after 25 years with the team. Overall, West was a radio play-by-play announcer for the Americans — and before that, the Spokane Chiefs — for 33 years.

In total, West covered 2,584 Western Hockey League games.

Track and field

Kamiakin’s girls and Walla Walla’s boys dominated the first teams for the Mid-Columbia Conference all-conference track and field teams this spring.

On the girls side, Kamiakin junior Adelyn Mitchell was named the Track athlete of the year, while teammate Aubrey Herrin, a sophomore, was named Field athlete of the year.

Mitchell was a first-team selection in the 100 meters, as well as the Braves’ 4x100 relay team.

Herrin was a first-teamer in the high jump, long jump, and the 4x100.

Kamiakin’s Cheryl Schauble was named MCC girls Coach of the Year.

The Braves also had two others named to the first team: sophomore Louesa Gledhill (300 hurdles) and junior Camia Howard (shot put).

Walla Walla was next with four first-team selections: junior Whitney Griffith (discus), junior Cami Martin (long jump), Carly Martin (400), and the 4x200 relay team.

Hermiston’s Megan Joyce, a junior, was the first-team selection in the 1600 meters, while sophomore Elizabeth Newman (3200) and the Bulldogs’ 4x400 relay team were honored.

Juniors Alyssa Marsh (200) and Baylee Wroble (javelin) were first-team reps for Richland; and three schools each had a member of the first team: Hanford sophomore Landry Allen (pole vault), Chiawana sophomore Emmas Gis (800), and Southridge junior Diana Kuwa (100 hurdles).

Walla Walla had the dominant boys team this spring, as senior Jake Hisaw was named MCC Track Athlete of the Year, and his father, Eric Hisaw, was named MCC boys Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, Chiawana senior Kade Smith was named MCC Field Athlete of the Year.

Jake Hisaw led the Blue Devils with being named to the first team in the 200 and 300 hurdles. Senior teammate Brody Hartley was first team in the 1600 and 3200; senior Nick Davis-Phillips shared the high jump honors with five other athletes; and senior Christopher Norris was the leading javelin thrower.

Chiawana’s Smith shared honors in the high jump, but he had the long jump and triple jump all to himself.

Sophomore Cooper MacPherson (high jump) also was a first-team pick for Chiawana. The Riverhawks’ 4x400 relay team was also named first team.

Richland senior Keenan Kuntz was first-team in the 100 meters, and he was part of the Bombers’ 4x100 relay team that was tops. Richland junior Elijah Lynch (pole vault) and sophomore Zachary Rose (high jump) were also first-teamers.

Kennewick junior Jackson Burns (110 high hurdles) and Lions sophomore Shaun Youngblood (high jump) made the first team; while junior Carson Condie (shot put) and senior Jackson Darling (discus) were first teamers for Southridge.

Three schools each had a first-team representative: senior Jose Banuelos (800) with Pasco; senior Brayden Outlaw with Kamiakin (high jump); and junior Landon Shilhanek (400) with Hermiston.

Golf

Kennewick’s Ken Wade finished sixth earlier this month at the Washington Golf Association’s Senior Men’s Amateur at Fairwood Golf & Country Club.

Wade fired a three-round total of 228.

In the men’s Super Senior state championship, Richland’s Chris Indall finished tied for seventh with a three-round total of 238.

New coaches

Pasco High recently announced new hirings for three of the Bulldogs’ upcoming sports teams.

Mark Figueroa has been hired to run the girls soccer program, while Sierra Perez is the new Pasco girls head basketball coach.

John Tucker will be the Bulldogs’ head volleyball coach this fall.
