Tell us: Do you trust Conservative leader Andrew Scheer?
After the official federal election campaign began on Wednesday, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer called for Justin Trudeau to stop lying, covering up his role in the SNC-Lavalin scandal and tell the truth.
“He has done everything he can to keep these facts hidden from Canadians,” Scheer said in his speech. “He is just not as advertised.”
Before the campaign announcement was made, The Globe and Mail discovered that the RCMP’s investigation into potential obstruction of justice in SNC-Lavalin’s prosecution has been blocked due to cabinet confidentiality. The Conservative leader responded to this story, saying Trudeau should have waved the rule in order for the police to investigate.
“He’s refused to allow his ministers to speak,” Scheer said. “He has done everything he can to keep these facts hidden from Canadians.”
Police must suspend operations on the potential obstruction of justice because of the federal election campaign.
Scheer also rejected the claim that Trudeau did not make the decision to maintain cabinet confidence, painting him as a “liar.”
“He is not telling the truth that it is not his decision,” Scheer said. “I stopped believing him when it was proven that he lied to Canadians.”
The Conservative leader went on to say that if elected, Trudeau will “keep breaking his promises” and said Canadians “just cannot trust Justin Trudeau.”
“He has lied, he has looked Canadians in the eyes and said things that he knew was not true and we made the case that he has lost the moral authority to govern,” Scheer said.
Currently, the Liberal and Conservative parties continue to be neck-and-neck in the polls. A recent survey by Campaign Research, which polled 2,094 Canadians between Sept. 3 to Sept. 5, found that both the Liberal and Conservative parties were sitting at 34 per cent support. The NDP and Green Party were both well below the other two, tied at 12 per cent.
A poll conducted by Mainstreet Research, which surveyed 1,876 Canadians between Sept. 6th to Sept. 8 using Interactive Voice Recording, found that the Liberals were slightly ahead with 38 per cent support, followed by the Conservatives at 34 per cent. The Green Party surpassed the NDP in this poll with 11 and 8 per cent support respectively.
Last month, Abacus Data asked Canadians to share their impression of each of the federal party leaders. Of the 4,549 respondents, 45 per cent said they have a negative impression of Trudeau and 35 per cent said they have a positive impression of the Liberal leader.
The poll also found that 37 per cent said they have a negative impression of Scheer and 33 per cent have a positive impression, with some significant regional differences. In Alberta and Saskatchewan, 49 per cent said they have a positive impression of the Conservative leader, while the percentage sits at 31 per cent across the rest of the country.
