Anne Hathaway Jokes She Has the 'Personality of a Vegan'
Ironically, the actress doesn't actually adhere to a plant-based diet
Anne Hathaway may not be a vegan – but she feels like one.
For her April 2024 cover story for Vanity Fair, the actress spoke with reporter Julie Miller at a plant-based restaurant, prompting her to hilariously admit something about herself.
“I think everybody can agree I have the personality of a vegan,” she quipped over green chickpea hummus and honeynut squash.
Later in the interview while discussing her public persona, she also shared how she builds her confidence and develops thick skin in such a competitive industry.
“Humiliation is such a rough thing to go through,” she said. “The key is to not let it close you down. You have to stay bold, and it can be hard because you’re like, ‘If I stay safe, if I hug the middle, if I don’t draw too much attention to myself, it won’t hurt.’ But if you want to do that, don’t be an actor.”
She hasn't given up meat — though she does love vegetables ("I die over beets,” she told VF) — but over the past five years, she has given up alcohol.
"I knew deep down it wasn’t for me,” she said of drinking. At first, it was hard to tell people she was completely abstaining, Hathaway admitted. "It just felt so extreme to have to say, ‘But none?’ But none," she said.
But soon enough, she began owning her personal choice.
"If you’re allergic to something or have an anaphylactic reaction to something, you don’t argue with it. So I stopped arguing with it," the Interstellar star said, adding that she doesn't judge people who do drink.
"My personal experience with it is that everything is better. For me, it was wallowing fuel. And I don’t like to wallow," she explained. "The thing that I have faith in is that everybody else is going to have one or two drinks, and by the time everybody gets to two drinks, you’ll feel like you’ve had two drinks—but without the hangover.”

Adjusting to becoming a mom of two also contributed to her choice to be sober. Her oldest son with husband Adam Shulman, Jonathan, turned 8 on Sunday. Their youngest son Jack is 3.
Over the years, the Oscar winner said she's also learned to be kinder to herself on sets than she was at the height of her fame in her 20s.
“I had a horrible anxiety attack and I was by myself and didn’t know what was happening. I certainly couldn’t tell anybody, and it was compounded by thinking I was keeping set waiting," Hathaway said, remembering a tough moment on an unnamed set.
"Now I feel much safer going to someone in charge, pulling them to the side, and explaining, ‘I’m going through this right now,’" she continued. "Most people will sit there with you for the 10 minutes it takes for you to come back down.”
