What's on tap for Montreal Museum Day?

Walking around Old Montreal this Sunday, you might catch a glimpse of Waykarü as he saunters about. The three-metre-high puppet, who has clumsy, long legs and a large tail, will be enchanting children in front of the Pointe-à-Callière archeology and history museum.

The giant puppet's performance is part of Montreal Museum Day, an annual event when dozens of Montreal museums and cultural venues will be free to the public, offering special activities and performances.

Here are just a few of the events you can attend this Montreal Museum Day.

Watch the Beijing Opera

At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, there will be a demonstration combining dance, song and theatre with the Beijing Opera.

Each performance will run about 20 minutes. They're scheduled for 10:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m. and 12:40 a.m.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is at 1380 Sherbrooke St W.

Dance with Anne-Flore de Rochambeau

At the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough, dancer Anne-Flore de Rochambeau will explore human interaction and the unconscious mechanisms that characterize our interactions.

She will take the stage in 20-minute performances at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.

The Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec is at 615 Sainte Croix Ave, Saint-Laurent.

Listen to Akawui's music

Author-composer Akawui will be at the McCord Museum performing music that mixes different musical genres from all over the world — including EDM, hip hop and Chilean-Mapuche melodies.

He will perform at 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m.

The McCord Museum is at 690 Sherbrooke St W.

Tell your own story

At the Stewart Museum, Montreal Playback Theatre will give Montrealers a chance to tell their personal stories — and see those stories re-enacted on stage.

The 20-minute shows will take place at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.

The Stewart Museum is at 20 Chemin du Tour de l'isle

Take a free bus — or a Bixi

Montreal Museum Day coincides with free Bixi day — so you can grab a Bixi bike to go from venue to venue.

The STM is also offering free shuttle service between the museums. They will run along four routes, taking visitors to museums off the beaten path, leaving from Angrignon, Du Collège and Jean-Drapeau stations.

The service runs from 9:30 a.m to 4:00 p.m.
