Argentina's President Javier Milei backs plan to provide Ukraine with five Super Etendard fighter jets, which were mothballed due to the UK embargo against Argentina, Infobae reported.

The corresponding plan was developed by Argentina's Foreign Minister Diana Mondino and Defense Minister Luis Petri.

France's participation is key in this matter, so Argentine officials have been working for several weeks to make progress on this step. The USA and NATO also participate in the process.

Mondino discussed the issue during meetings in Paris with French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné, as well as at an unannounced meeting with NATO in Brussels, and in a visit to White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

Luis Petri also plans to visit the NATO headquarters and, together with Diana Mondino, participate in the Peace Summit in Switzerland. He plans to meet with his French counterpart in Paris as well.

Petri plans to raise the issue of Milei's decision to send five Super Etendard aircraft to Ukraine at each meeting.

Argentina cannot access the planes due to an embargo imposed by the UK - since the planes arrived in the country in 2019, they have never been used. Former Argentine President Mauricio Macri purchased them knowing they would remain on the ground and London would never authorize their operation.

These jet fighters proved their strategic value during the Falkland War between the UK and Argentina for the Falkland Islands.

The Milei government's plan involves creating a workaround to bypass the UK embargo and give Ukraine access to military aircraft currently stored in Puerto Belgrano. Jet fighters need cartridges allowing the pilot's seat to be ejected in case of emergency.

Argentina will carry out an exchange with France in compliance with the plan to exchange the Super Etendard for other military equipment - drones or helicopters. French President Emmanuel Macron administration will be in charge of installing new cartridges in the catapult sockets.

Argentina will therefore not be directly involved in Russia's war against Ukraine, and the final political responsibility will remain with France.

Due to Macron having lost the EU parliamentary elections and is due to arrange elections in France for the end of the month, he is unlikely to pay much attention to issues outside the domestic agenda, and an election defeat could mean the end of his presidency. Should this happen, then Marine Le Pen - the leader of the far-right National Union bloc will become his successor, and Milei's plan will remain unrealized.
