Arrest warrant issued for suspect in fatal Plateau hit and run

An arrest warrant has been issued for Steven Harvey Pinnell in connection with a fatal hit and run on the Plateau Mont-Royal last Sunday.

Pinnell is facing charges related to the death of 79-year-old Zélia Araujo, who was struck and killed by a pickup truck while crossing Mont-Royal Avenue at St-Urbain Street.

The charges include failure to stop at the scene of an accident, committing an offence resulting in death and possession of stolen property.

The 33-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. was arrested on Monday for driving a vehicle seen swerving on a highway near West Nipissing, Ont.

When Ontario Provincial Police found him, they realized the 2012 silver Chevrolet Silverado he was driving was stolen from Montreal.

The vehicle matched the description and licence plate of the one involved in the hit and run that killed Araujo, said OPP Const. Louise Monette.

Pinnell, who has a criminal record in Montreal, was charged by Ontario Provincial Police with breaching probation.

Montreal police said they expect Pinnell to return to Montreal to face the charges by the end of the week.
