Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex receives $25K donation

Renovations to an historic building in Sussex to transform it into a professional exhibition gallery and museum space can now begin thanks in part to a $25,000 donation announced Saturday.

Former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna, who is currently the deputy chair of TD Bank, was in Sussex on Saturday to announce the bank's funding support for the project.

Also known as AX

After three years of studies, reports and consultation, the donation, along with money from the federal government and support from other sources, means the Arts and Culture Centre of Sussex (AX) is one step closer to becoming a reality.

The building is located at 12 Maple Avenue.

Peter Powning, a Markhamville sculptor and a driving force behind the project, said the AX board wants to add to the arts and culture community while providing a learning venue for new grads or young artists.

The AX plans to bring in customized exhibitions from the New Brunswick Museum, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and other art institutions.

Help young artists

The renovations will also incorporate ceramics transition studios to help young artists make the transition from studies to starting their own businesses with the help of mentors. AX also plans to sponsor festivals, literary readings, musical events, series of lectures, cinema offerings, and art classes for young people and adults.
