Baby pelican scoops up fish

The preferred food of the pelican is fish. Their beaks are adapted for scooping water and small fish and then draining the water so they can swallow their catch. This pelican demonstrates its technique for a group of fascinated tourists. They are also well known for their flying and can often be seen skimming the surface of the water in order to compress air better and conserve energy. Pelicans are believed to have existed for 30 million years.
