Banners honour veterans wartime service, sacrifice

Colourful banners featuring young wartime faces of living and deceased veterans hang from poles along Restigouche Road in Oromocto.

Two of the banners were hung in tribute to Brian Carroll's parents', Harry Carroll and Eleanor Carroll, who both served in the Second World War.

Carroll, a military veteran himself, worked to have the banners made — 12 in total — to honour those who served.

Ken O'Quinn's son, Cpl. Kenneth O'Quinn, is one of the deceased soldiers featured on a banner. He was killed in 2009 in Afghanistan.

"It's overwhelming to us driving down Restigouche Road and see your son's banner up on a pole. It's just a reminder to everybody around of the sacrifices that were made by him and everybody that they see."

Two of the veterans featured, Eleanor Carroll and Lois Davidson, are still living, both residents of the Veterans Health Unit in Fredericton.

"I'd like to see the veterans honoured in some way. They served their country, and they're all forgotten about, really," Carroll said.

"This will keep the names in their mind anyway. If you're driving by and look up, 'oh I knew that fellah, or I knew his son, or his grandson or whatever.'"

Sponsors helped cover the $200 cost of each banner, the brackets were donated by the military and the town of Oromocto donated the manpower to put them up.
