“Batman: Caped Crusader” trailer unveils new animated incarnation of the Dark Knight

The new superhero series stars the voices of Hamish Linklater, Christina Ricci, Jamie Chung, and Diedrich Bader.

Batman is no stranger to animation, but his latest cartoon incarnation is going to be different than ever before.

Bruce Timm, who helmed the beloved '90s show Batman: The Animated Series and its various spinoffs, is back in the driver's set for Batman: Caped Crusader. But the new series, coming to Amazon Prime Video later this summer, depicts a thornier version of the Dark Knight.

The new trailer for Caped Crusader opens with the question, "What do you think about the Batman?"

Various residents of Gotham City report that they're "frightened" and that "they ought to catch that freak and lock him up." You can see where they get that view: The superhero's costume is pointier and stranger than usual, and he seems to have little regard for the police.

Harley Quinn and Batman in 'Batman: Caped Crusader'

In a recent interview with EW, Timm described Batman (and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne) as "a really weird human being." Caped Crusader is set in the '40s, at the beginning of Batman's vigilante career, and no one knows what to make of him. Producer James Tucker told EW that "we try to wipe out the foregone conclusion that he's a hero — whether it’s for the police, regular citizens of Gotham, or the viewers."
