BC Hydro habitat compensation project to begin near Burton

A BC Hydro project to provide fish habitat in Caribou Creek near Burton is getting underway this July.

Three anchored wood and boulder structures will be installed in three areas along a 300-metre section of Caribou Creek, downstream of McCormack Road. Work is scheduled to begin on July 15 and continue through August.

The large woody debris (LWD) and ballast boulders will provide cover for adult bull trout, rainbow trout, and kokanee salmon. The LWD structures will be about 25 metres in length, installed parallel to the stream bank. Each structure will be comprised of a minimum of five logs that will be secured by boulders anchored by stainless steel cables. The boulders will give the LWD structures stability and limit movement during heavy downstream discharge.

Materials will be sourced locally, using either spruce, hemlock, pine, or fir species.

The work is part of a BC Hydro habit compensation project. The project report was prepared by WSP, a construction engineering and environmental consulting company. Work on the project began in July 2019 with initial site visits, and a detailed survey was completed in December 2022.
