Montreal police fatally shoot screwdriver-wielding man
A 58-year-old man shot multiple times during an operation involving Montreal police Tuesday has died. The investigation has been transferred to Quebec's independent investigations bureau.
Police say that around 7 p.m. they received a call about a man destroying items in his apartment, according to a statement from the bureau, known by its French acronym, BEI.
When police arrived at the scene, near the corner of Robillard and St-André streets, not far from Berri-UQÀM Metro, the man confronted them with a screwdriver in each hand, the statement said.
Police tried to subdue him with a stun gun and rubber bullets, but were unsuccessful. Officers then used their firearms some time between 7:19 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., when Urgences-Santé arrived at the scene.
Twelve BEI investigators are now working to confirm these preliminary details, transmitted by Montreal police and Urgences-Santé.
They have recruited the Quebec provincial police force to help in the investigation.
The city's ambulance services said the man was in cardiac arrest when he was transported to hospital.
The BEI is mandated to take over investigating all incidents in which a person is injured or killed during a police operation.
