36-year-old ID’d as cyclist killed in south Sacramento; police suspect driver was on drugs
A 36-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday night in an industrial part of south Sacramento.
Officers were dispatched about 10:30 p.m. to Fruitridge Road, just west of 88th Street, in the New Brighton section of the city where the cyclist was struck, the Sacramento Police Department said. Sacramento Fire Department responded first to a victim who was unresponsive in the roadway; crews pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene.
In an update Tuesday afternoon, police spokesman Officer Anthony Gamble said officers “determined that the driver was under the influence of a drug.” The driver was hospitalized with injuries and was expected to be booked in connection with drug possession and driving under the influence once medically cleared, he said.
The cyclist was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Jose Valladolid Ramirez of Sacramento.
The investigation of the crash was ongoing, Gamble said.
