How do Biden and Trump fare with Texas voters as they prepare for presidential debate?

Former President Donald Trump continues to fare better in Texas than President Joe Biden as the candidates prepare for their first debate of the 2024 presidential cycle.

Trump led with 46% of votes to Biden’s 39% in a head to head match up, according to a June poll from the Texas Politics Project at The University of Texas at Austin. Trump’s lead widens to 9 percentage points when independent and third party candidates are added to the ballot.

The poll surveyed 1,200 registered Texas voters between May 31 and June 9 and has a 2.83% margin of error.

The findings are consistent with other polls that have Trump ahead of Biden in the Lone Star State.

The June Texas Politics Project poll found that when voters were asked to pick between Biden, Trump, or “someone else” for president, 85% of Democrats supported Biden and 87% of Republicans supported Trump.

When independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Green Party candidate Jill Stein, independent Cornel West and Libertarian Chase Oliver were added, Trump had the support of 83% of Republicans and Biden had the support of 77% of Democrats. Kennedy, who did not qualify for Thursday’s debate, had the support of 8% of those polled.

Trump won Texas by 5.6 percentage points in 2020.

Trump and Biden will take the debate state at 8 p.m. in Atlanta for CNN’s presidential debate. The debate will last 90 minutes and can be watched on CNN, CNN.com and Max.
