How the big listeria recall of ice cream hit Publix, Walmart, Target, Food Lion, others

No. 1 Walmart and four others among the nation’s top 10 grocery sellers, two popular gourmet market chains and at least one convenience store chain got hit with nationwide recall of 13 brands of ice cream, ice cream sandwiches and gelatos.

They might have listeria.

Manufacturer Totally Cool’s recall announcement said the company has “ceased the production and distribution of the affected products due to FDA sampling, which discovered the presence of listeria monocytogenes. The company continues its investigation and is taking preventive actions.”

Listeria infects about 1,600 Americans each year and kills about 260, according to the CDC, and can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. People over 65 and children under 5 tend to get the worst of listeria. Most people suffer fever, headaches, confusion, muscle aches, fatigue, stiffness in the neck, poor balance and seizures.

If you have any of the below products, return them to the store for a full refund or at least throw them deep in the garbage so pets can’t get to them.
