Black bear breaks into Stanley Mission home, sends residents fleeing
A bear was euthanized by conservation officers after it managed to get into a Stanley Mission home on Sunday evening, according to the RCMP.
RCMP say a black bear entered the home in the northern community around 9:30 p.m. CST by pushing out a portable air conditioner in one of the windows.
One of the people needed medical attention after getting hurt while trying to escape. A man declined to comment on Monday but said family members were inside the home at the time.
RCMP said the bear left the house and ran a few hundred metres into the bush behind the home. Conservation officers euthanized a bear but it cannot be determined if it is the same bear from the incident.
Conservation officers have set up a trap near where the bear was last seen. It will remain up and the site will be monitored.
A bear knocked over a garbage bin outside of Alison McLeod's home around 2 a.m. early Monday morning, she said in a Facebook message. She had heard about the incident earlier and had been on high alert as a result.
"Our local security was notified and they scared it off, but it continued to come around each time it was scared away," McLeod wrote.
McLeod was watching a movie with her daughter when she heard the noise and saw the bear. Her daughter did not want to stay in the home after the incident so McLeod travelled to a cabin to visit with her parents.
Bear sightings are not uncommon but this is the first time she can recall a bear actually getting into someone's home in Stanley Mission, she said. It cannot be confirmed whether the bear at her house was the same bear that entered the other home.
RCMP are warning residents to be on the lookout for the bear and to call police if they see any signs of bear activity.
Stanley Mission is about 390 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
