As people around the world reel from the horror of the terror attacks that claimed 129 lives in Paris, cartoonists quickly picked up their pens and pencils to express their grief.

A French artist’s symbol for peace has been shared widely on social media. Jean Jullien painted the Eiffel Tower in a peace sign with a simple but powerful message, “Peace for Paris.”

Jullien said that he drew what he felt at the moment, “I thought we needed a message for peace,” he said in an interview with CNN on Sunday.

Other cartoons highlighted the ongoing refugee crisis and those trying to escape the violence happening in their own countries. Cartoonist Chan Lowe shows “ISIS' other victims” with a drawing of a family holding a sign that reads “Innocent Muslims.”

Jordanian cartoonist Osama Hajjaj portrayed Paris with a woman in tears in front of the Eiffel Tower, while others showed the city will remain strong in the face of such violent acts.

Here are just some of the powerful images to emerge from the tragedy.
