Close call: Cyclist saved by mattress that falls out of truck that hit him

One word: Lucky.

A young man riding a bicycle was struck by a truck carrying a mattress which, lucky for him, probably saved his life.

The video, which was captured from a security camera at a driving school in Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, shows the split-second collision between the cyclist and the truck. Within that same split second, a mattress flies off the back of the truck, slides underneath the cyclist, and he rides it out, surfer style.

Talk about a close call!

Unbelievably, the cyclist is perfectly fine — after taking a moment on the side of the road to do a quick count of all his fingers and toes. This young man certainly had an angel on his side.

Shortly after the incident, bystanders came to see if he was OK.

Sitting on the side of the road on the mattress, he was alive but probably in a bit of shock. The whole thing happened so fast and if that mattress hadn’t come between him and the truck, it’s very possible that cyclist wouldn’t be cycling ever again.

According to Brazil’s Globo, the driver, who paid no notice to the cyclist or the mattress that flew off the back of his truck, apparently returned later to check on him.
