Fort Steuben Bridge in Ohio comes down in spectacular fashion

Authorities in Ohio blew up a historic bridge that connected the state with West Virginia in spectacular fashion.

The 83-year-old Fort Steuben Bridge in Steubenville, Ohio hit the Ohio River in just three seconds after 70 kilograms of explosives were used on the 382-metre span.

The Ohio Department of Transportation closed the bridge, which opened in 1929, three years ago after deeming it was structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.

"Basically what we're doing is just cutting the steel." said Doug Loizeaux of Controlled Demolition Inc. in a KTOV article. "We're using almost like a remote torch but we'll be 500 feet away when we detonate it."

Workers then used cranes to lift large pieces of debris into barges.
