Bride, groom and the Internet brought to tears by moving haka dance

A Maori war dance captured on film at a wedding in New Zealand is setting off a emotional reaction across the Internet.

The haka is traditionally used to intimidate rivals, but is also performed on special occasions like weddings, rugby matches and other celebrations as a way to welcome important guests.

Participants of the haka shout, slap their body and make dramatic facial expressions.

The dance that’s capturing the world’s attention was performed last week at the wedding of Aaliyah and Benjamin Armstrong. The BBC reports that it was organized by the 23-year-old groom’s best man and was led by his older brother. By the end of the performance, the emotional bride and groom are taking part, along with a bridesmaid. When it’s over, they embrace the performers.

“I wasn’t planning on jumping in until one bridesmaid did,” Aaliyah Armstrong told the BBC. “I felt the need to show love and respect back. I was really blown away.”

Commenters on YouTube were also overcome by emotions.

“What is it about this video!! It shook my soul,” wrote one.

“Although I’ve never seen such a tradition, it was very touching to watch, and brought tears to my eyes. Wow. Not going to lie, I’ve watched this about 5 times now,” wrote another.
