Horse yoga: Weird yet surprisingly wonderful

Horse yoga.

Breathe … and as you move from warrior one, breathe into downward horse position.

Wait a minute … horse position?

Yes. As weird as it seems, horse yoga is one of the forms of the meditative exercises practiced in The Doma India School in San Luis, Argentina, and it’s amazing.

The video is astonishing. It is incredible to see how calm the horse is the entire time. On his back, legs stretched to the world, loving the calm that horse yoga has now brought to his life.

You don’t see horses this way. These are strong, fast, majestic creatures that you don’t really envision in the interesting positions demonstrated here, and it’s beautiful.

The soothing music and that sultry Spanish strangers voice in the background help to ease the mood, too. It’s just all good.

The Doma India School was established over 50 years ago by father and son Oscar and Cristobal Scarpati. The two of them work under the philosophy that respectful and non-violent horse training can establish a meaningful relationship between horse and man.

According to the school’s website, “the method is to tame the horse according to its nature, avoiding cause fear and pain, and by earning their trust and loyalty.”

The Scarpati family considers horses to be sacred. Therefore they develop and apply their horse yoga techniques to wild, nervous, or traumatized horses.

Horse yoga has sparked controversy however, as it is impossible to know for sure whether or not the horses actually enjoy the yoga experience.

Well, after the session that horse just had, I guarantee he went back to the barn feeling like the weight of the world was lifted off his saddle.

Namasté.
