Jordanian politician pulls gun on foe during live TV

Mohammed Shawabka has been charged with attempted murder for drawing his silver pistol on Mansour Seif-Eddine Murad during a debate

Canadian politicians may get a bit heated when discussing ideas with members of the opposing party, but we've never seen this before.

A Jordanian politician threw his shoe (a deeply insulting gesture in the Arab world) and then pointed his gun at a political foe on live TV.

Mohammed Shawabka drew his pistol from his pants and pointed it at Mansour Seif-Eddine Murad. The two men were debating Syria's uprising on the private Jordanian Josat satellite station. Shawabka has now been charged with attempted murder for the stunt.

The fight began when Shawabka accused Murad of being a spy for Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime. Murad denied the allegation and accused Shawabka of being an agent for the Israeli secret service.

Shawabka began to point his finger and stand as Host Mohammed Habashna tried to cool him and get him to sit down. But that didn't seem to work. Shawabka took his shoe off and chucked it at Murad. As Murad tried to get out the way he toppled over the desk he was sitting behind and Shawabka then drew his revolver and chased Murad around the small set.

"I couldn't believe my eyes," said Habashna to The Associated Press. "It was like the Wild West, but we needed horses in the studio."

"He was going to shoot me and he should be punished for that," said Murad in an AP article.

Murad is a former guerrilla with a Palestinian group and was jailed in Greece in 1969 for a hand grenade attack on the Athens office of the Israeli airline that killed one child. He was later freed in exchange for hostages on a hijacked airliner.

Shawabka has declined to comment.
