Lowe’s driver pulled from delivery after customer requests white delivery man

Marcus Bradley has been working as a delivery driver for 11 years at home improvement chain Lowe’s in Danville, Virginia.

Last Monday, Bradley was on his way to make a delivery when he received a call from his manager saying that he needed to turn ahead and come back.

The reason behind the odd request was the colour of his skin.

“I got a phone call on the phone telling me to bring the delivery back. Saying that I couldn’t do the delivery,” Bradley told WTVR. “I asked him why I couldn’t do it and he said because you’re black and they don’t want you at the house.”

According to ABC 13, the customer requested that Bradley be replaced with a white delivery driver. Once he was replaced, the delivery was sent out again.

What shocked Bradley the most about the incident was the way the store manager handled the situation. He didn’t expect his employer to support the customer’s side.

“I mean, I thought that Lowe’s would take up for me,” said Bradley.

ABC 13 caught up with the woman who refused the black delivery man to enter her house.

“I got a right to have whatever I want and that’s it,” she said. “I don’t feel bad about nothing.”

Since the incident, Lowe’s has issued a statement obtained by WSET-TV saying the situation was “troubling and an investigation was immediately undertaken.”

They added that “under no circumstances should a discriminatory delivery request be honoured as it is inconsistent with our diversity core values and the request should have been refused.”

The store manager has since been replaced. As for Bradley, he plans to continue to work at Lowe’s.

“I’m going to keep working like I’ve always done,” he told WSET-TV. “But I would think Lowe’s would take it into consideration to think about what they’re doing next time.”
