Social media monitoring firm Viralheat crawled the web to learn the most talked about treat is the tiny chocolate capsules coated with hard candy. Halloween candy has been a popular topic on Twitter this past week with almost 65,000 mentions. Coming in a distant second and leading the fruit category are Skittles. The next most-popular treats are Snickers, Twix and Reese's. Starburst was also talked about, but nowhere near as much. To the delight of most kids, apples weren't mentioned.

This all means that M&M's parent company Mars, which also makes Snickers, Skittles and Twix among other treats, is in for a big pay day in October. Statistics Canada crunched some numbers and say there are 3.73 million potential trick-or-treaters who may hit up 13.3 million homes asking that famous question. The answer will usually be the treat. Last year Canadians spent $80 million more on candy in October than we usually spend in an average month.
