A North Carolina man is due in court, stemming from a charge that’s as dated as the motto “Be Kind, Please Rewind”.

James Meyers was recently arrested for not returning a 2002 VHS rental. The movie in question? “Freddy Got Fingered”, a 2001 vehicle that stars Canadian comic Tom Green.

Meyers was initially pulled over by Concord police for a taillight that was out while he was driving his daughter to school. After officers ran his license, they told him to step out of the vehicle.

“The officer said, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie “Freddy Got Fingered” and never returned it.’ I thought he was joking,” Meyers told WSOCTV.

Even though the rental store, J&J’s Video, has since gone the way of countless other video stores and closed, Meyers is due in court on April 27 for failing to return the video.

“They’re not focusing on the crimes I think they should be focusing on,” said Meyers. “That hour the cops sat out there with me, the hour and a half I was down in the magistrate’s office could have been spent somewhere else.”

At least Meyers has got a heavy hitter in his corner: Green. The comedian told the Daily News that he would help Meyers out financially, as long as the outcome wasn’t outrageous.

“If it’s 200 bucks of course I’ll pay it for him, just for the principle of the thing,” Green said.
