When one kid couldn’t afford the role-playing card games he adored, he didn’t stop playing. Instead, he went ahead and created an elaborate deck of his own.

That kid is now an adult, and goes by the Reddit username one23abc. He recently created a post with the following title: “When I was little, my brother and I loved card games like pokemon and yugi-oh, but we were too poor to buy them. So we made our own card game.”

The first photo shows the card deck stored in a ragged cardboard box labelled simply “Creature Card.” There appear to be hundreds of cards packed tightly together in the box.

The next photo shows the cards fanned out on the floor, and it’s here that the epic amount of work and creativity that went into this game is most apparent. Each card is colour-coded, illustrated and assigned a point value based on what appears to be sophisticated scoring system.

The cards have names like “Bullengore the Minotaur” and “Biotoxic virus” and are designed to be played with rules similar to Pokemon cards.

One23abc explains the inspiration behind one card, the “Dyson Fafita”:

“The design is based off the Troy McClure from the Simpsons and the name is from the vacuum cleaner brand, Dyson. There was too much writing to fit on one card so we had to make another card for his special card effect.”

Needless to say, the nerds of the internet was impressed.

Wrote Redditor carmex2121:

“As children you probably thought you had an inferior version, but this is priceless. What a memento of your youth and creativity.”

They say that necessity is the mother invention. Apparently a child’s desire to play comes in a close second.
