Must-see videos of the week – August 30

This looks like a scene straight out of a movie! Now those are some scary looking clouds!

Just when you thought the summer blockbusters were over, it seems like we’ve got all the makings of a big-budget (okay, maybe B-movie) alien invasion in this week’s video roundup. Freaky weather and strange creatures feature prominently in our first two videos. We’ve also got a scary scene on a racetrack, a new take on Shakespeare and a motorist's moves to put a smile on your face. Here are this week’s must-see videos:

1. Ominous storm clouds roll over city

In what looks like a scene out of a movie (you know, right before the aliens invade), this footage of clouds rolling over a city is a pretty freaky site. The exact location of this video is unknown, but if I saw something like that coming in, I’d sure as heck run for cover. According to Scott Sutherland, our Geekquinox blogger and local weather expert, it’s what those in the biz call a “gust front,” a particular cloud formation that forms ahead of thunderstorms due to warm, humid air surrounding the storm meeting the cooler air under the storm.

2. Bizarre waving fungus says hello

As far as we know, this isn’t some alien who’s dropped in to say hi. The person who took this video seems just as confused as the rest of us, at first thinking that some tiny insect or the wind was making it move. Some suggest that the culprit may be Beech Blight Aphids, tiny insects that move at the same time when they feel threatened. But the photographer seems to think that it was the fungus itself moving, as the tendrils seemed attached to the luminous fungus.

3. Footage of race car fire, from racer’s perspective

During last Friday’s heat at the Mahoning Valley Speedway, driver Michael Stofflet had a terrifying moment when his car rolled, then caught fire due to a fuel leak. Thanks to the fast actions of those on the track that day, Stofflet managed to escape the inferno without any burns. Even more miraculously, the car was ready to roll again after a half hour of work. Stofflet got back in and managed to finish fifth in his race.

4. Shakespeare goes hip-hop behind bars

Inmates at Cook County jail got some new cultural exposure this week when Othello – The Remix came for a performance. The classic Shakespearean play was given a hip-hop overhaul by brothers JQ and GQ, who modernized the lyrics and set them to contemporary music, while keeping the themes of the play intact. This is just the first William Shakespeare play for which they have created a hip-hop translation, but the brothers would like to eventually re-work all of the Bard’s famed plays, including A Mad-Summer Night’s Dream, The Associated Press reports.

5. Motorcycle rider makes good use of time at stoplight

This motorcyclist appears to grow bored of waiting for the light to change while seated on his bike. Instead, he gets a good stretch in by hopping off and shaking his groove thing. Hopefully the other drivers were as amused as this photographer was – the last thing we need is someone’s road rage over a driver’s dance moves.
