‘Sleeping Beauty’ prom entrance makes Internet go crazy

Ashvonn Russell wanted to create a prom entrance to remember, but she didn’t realize it would send the Internet into a frenzy.

In lieu of a limousine, Russell was driven to the prom in a much larger vehicle: an ambulance. When she arrived at the location, she was taken out on a stretcher, and in ‘Sleeping Beauty’-fashion, only to be “awoken” by a kiss from her Prince Charming.

It was all part of her plan.

The entrance gained traction online after Twitter user ‘Captain Pajamas’ posted pictures to his timeline, captioned, “She went to prom in an ambulance and woke up after she got kissed by prince charming lol.”

Since then, the tweet has been favourited and retweeted over 7,500 times, with many people criticizing her use of an emergency vehicle and some calling it “absurd.”

The viral entrance came as a result of a contest for “Best Entrance” at the prom, which was put on by a local Key Club for three different high schools on the Abaco Islands, Buzzfeed News reports.

Russell told the news outlet that she likes to “think outside the box.”

“This is evident in all of my paintings and drawings, which are mostly inspired by fairytales,” she said. “’Sleeping Beauty’ with a modern twist captured my interest for my prom entrance.”

It’s “bittersweet” that her entrance has been spread all across the internet, because although she has received some nice, encouraging comments, she has also been accused of being insensitive.

“My hope for this theme was genuinely and solely to win best entrance by my unique style of entry and not for some of the negative attention and exposure it has received,” she said.

Hurt by the criticisms that she got, Russell then apologized to those who she may have offended, writing that “it was not [her] intention to offend anyone.”

Russell also declined to share with Buzzfeed News how she snagged an ambulance for the dance.
