Videos: Mount Etna showers rocks over Sicily

Sicily's weather forecast had a chance of rock showers this weekend as powerful Mount Etna erupted in vast plumes of smoke and ash.

Mount Etna, a towering presence over Sicily, erupts frequently, and scientists are still trying to understand why, LiveScience reported recently. The explanation for the Etna's restless gurgling could be related to volcanic "indigestion," LiveScience wrote — the way gas such as carbon dioxide builds up constantly in this volcano in particular.

One certainty is that Etna presents quite a show when she erupts. Videos uploaded this week show the smoke, rocks and reactions from locals during the most recent event.

A video uploaded by Turi Scandurra shows some Sicilians' remarkably calm reaction to being pummeled with stones. A woman sweeps off her front steps, people walk casually holding umbrellas and others pour water onto their vehicles to clean off the ash.

Another video credited to Tony Motta shows hikers standing in the forest as rocks tumble from the sky. As they drive away, the stones leave cracks in their windshield.

Two more clips by Reuters and Graziano Patanè show Mount Etna filling the blue sky with dark ash clouds.

The eruption on Saturday didn't cause any evacuations, according to the Associated Press, only a brief highway closure and flight path closures.
