Wheelchair-bound boy dons amazing Halloween costumes built by stepdad

Jake wears a tank costume built by his stepdad, Andy Gregory, in 2014.

For the past three years, a stepdad in Colorado has been building impressive Halloween costumes for his stepson, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, that incorporate 6-year-old Jake’s wheelchair.

This year, Andy Gregory built an Army tank, complete with smoking cannon made from “a 4” PVC pipe with a cap and some dry ice and water.”

“It’s a lot of fun to do and it gets him a lot of attention from the other kids. He loves being around other kids,” Gregory, known as Viper20220k on Reddit, wrote of his stepson.

“He is nonverbal and unable to communicate at this time,” he continued. “He smiles and laughs a lot, we have a good idea what books, stories, movies, cartoons etc he is in to. We are always introducing him to new things and we keep tabs on what he seems to enjoy. That is basically how we zero in on what we are building that year.”

Last Halloween, the “stepfather of the yearbuilt a fire engine with a functioning light bar around the Jake’s wheelchair.

And two years ago, he built a pirate ship on wheels.

Gregory wrote on Reddit that each costume takes between 15 and 30 hours to build. And he doesn’t always build them alone, either.

“My wonderful wife is also there to lend a hand,” he added.

When Redditors praised Gregory for stepping up and being an awesome dad to his wife’s son, he was quick to defer the praise:

“I am not the amazing one, my wife is. She is on a whole ‘nother level. And the bonus, she had an awesome son to sweeten the deal.”

His humble response only earned him more fans.

"HUMBLENESS JUST MAKES HIM COOLER," wrote Reddit user pheedback.

As for next year’s costume, Gregory already has one idea:

We’re going to introduce him to Clone Wars soon. Maybe next year will be a Star Wars theme,” Gregory wrote.
