Canadian government websites under cyber attack: Clement

Federal government websites are under a cyber attack, according to Treasury Board President Tony Clement.

Clement tweeted early Wednesday afternoon, “Confirmed today that Govt of Canada GC servers have been cyberattacked. Until full service is restored please use 1-800-OCanada.”

He didn’t say who was responsible for taking sites, such as Canada.ca and news.gc.ca, offline.

But a Twitter user called SplendidMass29, who claims to be a member of the hacktivist group Anonymous, began posting messages, including “it’s your move senators, now it’s ours.”

That tweet linked to a YouTube video which included a blurb saying, “we launched an attack against the Canadian senate and government of Canada websites in protest against the recent passing of bill C-51. A bill which is a clear violation of the universal declaration of human rights, rights, as well as removing our legal protections that have stood, enshrined in the Magna Carta for 800 years.”
