Earthquake shakes Toronto, Ottawa

Some Ontario residents got a shaky surprise after lunch Tuesday when a 5.9 magnitude earthquake shook homes and office buildings around the province.

Social networks like Twitter and Facebook immediately lit up with reports of similar shakes in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Virgina.

The quake's epicenter was near Richmond, Virgina and forced the evacuation of the Pentagon in Washington, reports stated.

Computers were vibrating at the Yahoo! Canada newsroom in downtown Toronto on the waterfront. Reporters from the Toronto Star also tweeted their newsroom shaking.

The Earthquakes Canada website crashed shortly after the quake struck. It's back up.
