For his 103rd birthday, Toronto man held a party for strangers

On Bruce MacLean's 101st birthday, he threw a party — for everyone.

It was the beginning of a tradition.

This week, the retired University of Toronto mathematics professor held a roast beef luncheon at Toronto's Evangel Hall Mission for his 103rd birthday.

There, he celebrated with roughly 150 strangers, handing out roses to female guests and welcoming everyone as if they were family.

The party had two cakes: one wishing MacLean a happy birthday, the other wishing everyone else the same.

"It's not really a celebration of my birthday," MacLean told the Toronto Sun. "It's a celebration of everybody's birthday. All of these people don't have a birthday celebration so we thought we would have a celebration where they can come and celebrate their birthdays."

"He's just a very giving person and this is proof of it," said MacLean's daughter, Linda Ann. "He's always been very generous to all his friends and family and that's just the way he is."

And, yes, he plans to do the same next year.

"If I'm not here ... I'll do it again anyway," he told CityTV News.
