118-carat diamond auctioned off for record $30.6 million

On Monday, Sotheby's auctioned off a 118-carat, flawless D-diamond for a record $30.6 million, making it the most expensive white diamond ever sold at auction.

About the size of an egg, it's also the largest diamond ever to have been sold at auction.

The stone was discovered in southern Africa in 2011, and "is the largest and most significant such diamond graded by the Gemological Institute of America," TODAY reported.

Sotheby's declined to comment on the seller or the buyer.

The previous auction-price record for a white diamond was $26.74 million, sold at Christie's this spring. The record will likely be broken again when Sotheby's auctions off a 59.60-carat pink diamond in Geneva this November.

The rare pink diamond is expected to sell for more than $60 million.
