Artist turns turntables into Spirograph machine

Ohio University printmaking MFA student Robert Howsare hacked two ordinary turntables to make Spirograph images.

The simple art project, named "Drawing Apparatus," cost him just $50.

"The turntables were just the ones I had in my house," Howsare told Wired.

"That's where the beauty lies — that it's just household things," he continued. "My work is really about systems and how things operate and function — tweaking them, and intervening with how they normally operate."

"The revolution of the records create drawings that serve as a markers of temporality. The drawings also speak to the idea of the editionable print through their ability to be replicated using domestic materials," Howsare wrote on his website, summarizing his project.
