‘Beauty is Embarrassing’: New doc celebrates the art of Wayne White

Wayne White. You may not know the name, but you've likely seen his work.

White is an artist, art director, cartoonist and illustrator, most know for his iconic set and puppet design for "Pee Wee's Playhouse." (He also designed the set for "Shining Time Station" and "The Weird Al Show," among others, and designed sets for the Smashing Pumpkins' music video, "Tonight, Tonight.")

In recent years, White has been concentrating on his painting career — "His most successful works have been the world paintings featuring oversized, three dimensional text pain stakingly integrated into vintage landscape reproductions" — and in puppet installations.

A new documentary is giving us a glimpse into the life of the man Matt Groening describes as "a little Zach Galifianakis, a little Snuffy Smith, a little Unabomber."

"Beauty Is Embarrassing is a funny, irreverent, joyful and inspiring documentary featuring the life and current times of one of America's most important artists, Wayne White."

The film is set to debut at the SXSW Film Festival in March.

"At its core, Beauty Is Embarrassing is a reminder that we should all follow our passion. It is those creative impulses that will lead us to where we need to go."
