Egypt funeral turns into a celebration after ‘dead’ man awakes
A 28-year-old waiter from southern Egypt got to do what most of us never will. He attended his own funeral — and lived to tell about it.
Hamdi Hafez al-Nubi suffered a heart attack at work. Soon after, hospital officials declared the young man dead.
al-Nubi's family took him home to wash his body and prepare it for burial according to their Islamic traditions, the Associated Press reports. A doctor came to the house to sign the death certificate, only to discover that the body was still warm.
al-Nubi was alive.
His mother fainted at the news.
The doctor helped revive both al-Nubi and his mother, both of whom joined their guests in celebration at the cancelled funeral.
Just last month, an Argentine mother found her newborn daughter alive in a coffin — 12 hours after being declared dead.
And in July, 2011, a South African "dead" man woke up screaming after 21 hours in a refrigerated morgue.
"Dead" just isn't what it used to be.
