Kid Rock surprises severely injured soldier with new home

On Saturday evening, Kid Rock surprised Sergeant Davin Dumar and his wife, Dana, with a free new home in Macomb Township, Michigan.

The Dumars were walking through a model home only to find Kid Rock, friends, relatives and the media waiting for them inside.

"First of all, welcome home," Rock told the shocked couple. "You are going to receive a fully-furnished home, top to bottom. Thank you for your service."

The couple will receive a 2,600-square-foot colonial home, similar to the model home they toured.

Dumar, who lost a leg and injured both his hands in Afghanistan last year, was chosen by Operation Finally Home, a Texas-based nonprofit organization that has been building homes for wounded soldiers for the past seven years.

Rock approached Dan Wallrath, founder of Operation Finally Home, and asked him to provide housing for injured troops in Michigan.

"I wanted to do something close to home," Rock told Journal Register News Service. "My philosophy is — help your neighbour first."

The Dumars thought they were being interviewed for placement in the program when they were driven to the model home on Saturday. The couple's new home will be completed early next year.

"The house was built by Pulte Group in Macomb County's Macomb Township. It's a gift to the Dumars from Pulte, Rock and the New Braunfels, Texas-based nonprofit group Operation Finally Home," the Associated Press reports.

"I love my job and I'd do it all over again if I had to," a surprised and overwhelmed Dumar told the Detroit News.

The Dumars plan to renew their vows — and start a family — after moving into their new home.
