Library in P.E.I. the smallest in the world?

Housed in this tiny building, Canada's Smallest Library has about 1,800 books.

John A. MacDonald operates what he calls "Canada's smallest library" in Cardigan, Prince Edward Island. And now he's trying to have it recognized as the smallest in the world by Guinness World Records.

The building holds 1,800 books in its tiny 3.5 x 3.5 metre frame. A lifetime membership costs $5, and customers are expected to sign out and return books on the honour system.

"I would say that there’s a very good selection of books here," MacDonald’s 12-year-old daughter Alexandrea, who helps out at the library, told CBC News.

Officials at Guinness World Records told MacDonald that there currently isn't a category for the world's smallest library. MacDonald is hoping the organization will consider creating one.

Meanwhile, The World Record Academy, known as "the world's largest record certifying organization," has unlimited categories — they have awarded MacDonald with the record for the world's smallest library.
