Now hiring at The Peabody Hotel: Assistant Duckmaster, apply within

A Memphis hotel is currently reviewing applications for the position of assistant duckmaster.

Yes, duckmaster.

Jason Sensat, the current duckmaster at The Peabody, said the previous assistant duckmaster just transferred to the concierge desk. He's now filtering through 100-plus applications of those eager to fill the role.

The position is part of a 78-year tradition at the hotel. Every day, the duckmaster escorts the hotel's five ducks to the hotel's lobby fountain for their twice-daily swim.

What qualifications does an aspiring duckmaster need?

A background in public speaking helps, Sensat says, as "the majority of your time is spent talking with guests."

He and the assistant duckmaster are also responsible for maintaining the ducks' "calm and inviting" environment, making sure their $200,000 rooftop nest — called the Royal Duck Palace — is kept spotless and stocked with food.

Every three months, The Peabody's mallards are released into the wild and new ducks move in for training.

"It's basically getting the ducks into a routine," Sensat said, "that allows us to herd the ducks into the area that we need them to be — then back off and let them relax."

Peabody ducks are A-listers.

The "Peabody Marching Ducks" have appeared on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," and were featured in the Rubber Ducky Day celebration on "Sesame Street." They've also posed in the "Sports Illustrated" Swimsuit Issue.

It should be noted that The Peabody's French restaurant, Chez Philippe, is likely the only French restaurant in the world that doesn't have duck on the menu.
