A young Nigerian boy who was left to die in the street has been given a second-chance at life after being accused of witchcraft by his family.

Anja Ringgren Loven is a Danish rescue worker who founded the African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated towards helping African children who have been labeled as witches, reports Earthables.

Often individuals suspected of witchcraft face violence, torture and are ostracized from their families and friends. This was the case for one unlucky two-year-old found wandering naked and alone, after being abandoned by his family eight months ago.

The boy was not only severely malnourished, but also suffering from stomach worms after surviving on nothing but scraps of foods thrown to him by random passersby.

Loven immediately leaped into action, offering him food and water and sending the boy, whom she named Hope, to her aid centre for immediate medical care.

Hope was given food, shelter and medicine to help deal with his many ailments. The worms from his stomach were eventually eradicated, and daily blood transfusions helped raise Hope’s red blood cells to healthy levels.

Loren also posted pictures of Hope’s predicament online and asked the public for funds to help pay for his costly medical bills. In an outpouring of support, Loren received over one million dollars that will be used to help save other children from similar fates.

As for Hope, his condition is now stable and he’s able to sit up, eat by himself and even play with other children at the health centre.
