Boo! Download these free ‘Twilight Zone’ radio dramas

Halloween is around the corner, therefore you're likely going to spend your cash on a costume -- or at least some treats for the kids in the neighbourhood.

So, couldn't you use a frightfully fun and free download for your favourite smartphone, tablet, MP3 player or computer?

Whether or not you've seen the classic and often creepy Twilight Zone television series -- that ran from 1959 to 1964 -- you'll likely enjoy the newer audio versions of these episodes, which you can listen to while driving, walking or relaxing at night with the lights out. These sci-fi and horror stories — especially those with a macabre twist at the end — still hold up well today.

Along with audio remakes of most of the 156 original episodes ($1.95 apiece), there are also a dozen or so new TZ plays to purchase -- but here's how to get six episodes for free. That way, you can see if you like them before buying individual episodes.

If you go to the Twilight Zone Radio Dramas downloads page, you'll see you can grab these three free 40-minute episodes (in MP3 format):

• "The After Hours" — Starring Kim Fields, as a woman who wanders onto a mysterious floor of a department store, after it closes to the public.

• "Long Live Walter Jameson" -- Lou Diamond Phillips stars in this tale about a college professor who learns his prospective son-in-law hasn't aged — in 2,000 years.

• "The Walk Abouts" — This new radio play tells of conspiracy novelist (voiced by Mike Starr) who writes about aliens and UFOs. He might just be surprised about how wide-reaching his fanbase is.

You can also access these free Twilight Zone radio plays via a free app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Available at the iTunes App Store, this free app lets you purchase the same three aforementioned episodes from the website — right from within the app — and no computer is required.

Want three more for free? While you can't download them to listen to offline, the main Twilight Zone radio dramas website has three more shows you can stream from the lower right-hand corner:

• "Five Characters in Search of an Exit" - Starring Jason Alexander, this classic episode tells of a clown, hobo, ballet dancer and bagpiper, all of whom are trying to figure out where they are and how to get out.

• "Ring-A-Ding Girl" - Sarah Wayne Callies stars as Bunny Blake, a movie star who travels to her hometown because of a strange premonition.

• "Long Distance Call" — A young boy communicates with his recently deceased grandmother on a toy telephone she gave him before she died. Starring Hal Sparks.
