Kellie Pickler shaves her head in solidarity with friend with cancer

Country music singer and former "American Idol" contestant Kellie Pickler shocked her fans this week with a bold, beautiful buzz cut, which she revealed on "Good Morning America." She lost her locks of gold, but Pickler proved she has a heart of gold, too.

Pickler, 26, made the cut for her best friend Summer Miller, 35, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. As Miller was about to start chemotherapy, Pickler decided they should shave their heads together -- and that's just what they did, while laughing, joking, hugging, and wiping each other's tears.

The two friends met as teen pageant contestants and have been best friends ever since. According to a press release on Pickler's Facebook page, the singer even refers to Miller as her sister. Pickler had a troubled past with her own family: Her father was in and out of jail and her mother was physically and mentally abusive. It's easy to see how important Miller is to the "100 Proof" singer.

Other stars have gone short for their own reasons, whether movie roles (Natalie Portman), style (Sinéad O'Connor), or who knows why (Britney Spears). But Pickler's goal to raise awareness for early detection of breast cancer is one we can all get behind.

"It's been a great life-changing day," Pickler tweeted on September 4 from Nashville, Tennessee.

"I cannot thank everyone enough for all the love and support you've given Summer. Chemo starts tomorrow. #SayAPrayerForSummer," she tweeted yesterday.

Even through the rough times, Pickler hasn't lost her sense of humour.

"Thinking about being 'G.I. Jane' for Halloween. ;)" she tweeted.
