Search suspended after collision in Port of Montreal

Family identifies boater missing in St. Lawrence River

Montreal police say the search for the boat and possible victims will resume Thursday following a collision between a speedboat and container ship docked in the Port of Montreal Tuesday night.

Pascale Fortin, a communications officer for the Coast Guard, said they received a call Tuesday night around 10 p.m. from a witness who thought someone might have fallen into the water as a result of the collision.

Police expanded on the details Wednesday, saying they received reports of a boat that was travelling at high speed and then hit the container ship MSC Diego.

Someone on the ship told police he felt the collision and thought he saw one or two people fall from the speedboat into the water. The company believes it was a crane operator or longshoreman who made that report.

Police say no one has been reported missing and it's not clear if someone actually fell in the water.

The front of the boat was heavily damaged in the crash and the vessel sank.

Coast Guard boats, members of the Montreal and Longueuil fire departments, a provincial police helicopter, an armed forces helicopter and Hercules plane have all taken part in the search since Tuesday.
