Extreme cold warning issued for all of Manitoba

Bundle up and stay indoors tonight, Manitobans: the entire province is under an extreme cold warning.

The warning was issued by Environment Canada late Friday afternoon. It will remain in effect overnight and on Saturday morning.

"In the south we're looking at temperatures in the –30s [and] a little bit of wind along with that," CBC meteorologist John Sauder said at 4:30 p.m.

It'll be a gusty Friday evening in Winnipeg, with Sauder forecasting wind speeds of 30 to 50 km/h.

Combine that with temperatures near –20 C by 8 p.m. and dip to –31 C overnight, and you can expect a wind chill that will feel like –40.

"Overnight, winds will produce wind chill factors that will freeze exposed skin in 10 minutes or less," Sauder said.

But it will be even colder in the northern part of the province, he warns.

"We're looking at dangerous wind chills with freeze times on exposed skin of two minutes or less," he said.
