A British man has died after being found with head injuries in the water off the Greek island of Spetses.

The man, 44, who is said to have been a member of crew on a sailing boat, was pulled from the sea in the island’s Tsaldari bay on Friday.

He was found with head injuries to the left side of his head, local media reported, citing the coastguard.

He was taken to the island’s health centre, where he was pronounced dead.

His body was due to be transferred to the city of Piraeus on mainland Greece for a post-mortem on Friday afternoon, said news website Kathimerini.

Spetses is one of the Saronic Islands, and is home to around 3,800 residents.

As a holiday destination, it is known for attracting the wealthy and famous, including the Greek Royal Family.
