New Brunswick weather: Windy and sunny end to winter

A ridge of high pressure is building in New Brunswick to bring the winter to an end on a sunny note.

Peter Coade, a CBC meteorologist, says the latest storm is moving across the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador but it has further intensified since it was in the Maritimes.

"Wind will be felt through the day today, blowing around all that snow it left behind," said Coade.

Thursday in northern New Brunswick will be mainly cloudy in the west, a mix of sun and cloud in the east with winds from the northwest gusting to 50 km/h and a high of –6 C in the west and –2 C in the east.

For Fredericton and area, it will be windy and cold on Thursday with local blowing snow in the morning, becoming mainly sunny by afternoon with winds from the northwest at 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h.

The high temperature will be near –4 C but with the wind chill it will feel like –11.

In southern New Brunswick, it will be cloudy and windy on Thursday morning with blowing snow. But the skies will clear to a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon.

Winds will be from the northwest at 30 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h with a high of –4 C in the southwest, and –2 C in the southeast.

The wind will make it feel like –11 in the southwest and –8 in the southeast.

Weekend starts with sun

Friday is expected to be sunny with temperatures above 0 C, but the sunshine will not last into the weekend, Coade say.

There is a disturbance tracking along the length of mainland Nova Scotia on Saturday evening and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence by Sunday morning.

"Assuming this track holds true, what starts as snow will quickly change to rain in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and possibly to rain in southeastern New Brunswick, Saturday evening into early Sunday morning," he said.

Temperatures are expected to be above the melting point on Saturday and return to colder than normal for Sunday.
