Casualty fans will be treated to a third visit from Cagney & Lacey star Sharon Gless tonight (February 28), as Zsa Zsa Harper-Jenkinson heads back to the ED.

World class neurosurgeon Zsa Zsa will arrive to perform life-saving surgery on Lev and Faith's young son Luka, who has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.

Speaking to Digital Spy about returning to Casualty again, Sharon said: "It was a bit of a surprise. I thought it was just one stint originally. I didn’t think I’d be back again but then I was invited back the following year.

"The year after that, I wasn’t invited back as quickly so I thought they'd had enough of Zsa Zsa and that she'd run her course. But then a few months later, the producer got in touch and asked if I'd come back – I was thrilled."

Discussing her time back on the Cariff set, Sharon explained: " I love getting to work at Casualty – it's like a big family. All the cast and crew – they are so kind and it's just a wonderful experience.

"Zsa Zsa is a wonderfully colourful character and I always have so much fun. It was an absolute delight. I do worry about whether they’ll invite me back for a fourth year, but I am hoping they will. I'd love to come back."

Sharon did, however, admit that she found the nature of Zsa Zsa's return story a more harrowing process this time round.

"As an actress I was happy about the story, but for Zsa Zsa – no", she said. " It's very sad as it's about a young child. I can't give too much away but you get to see Zsa Zsa's more vulnerable side when it doesn't necessarily go the way she hoped. It's all very sad."

Casualty airs these scenes tonight at 9.10pm on BBC One.
