A Calgary man accused of killing a toddler was released on bail at his first court appearance Friday.

Winston Campbell, 45, was charged Wednesday with manslaughter in the 2022 death of two-year-old Olivia Hayden.

On Friday, defence lawyer Cory Wilson appeared in court and told Justice Sean Dunnigan that prosecutor Rosalind Greenwood consented to Campbell's release.

Dunnigan granted bail on conditions that Campbell stay away from alcohol, drugs and places where children gather.

He cannot be in contact with any children besides his own and even then an adult must be present.

There is also a no-contact order with Campbell's former girlfriend, the toddler's mother.

The charge was laid this week following what police described as an "extensive investigation."

Around 2 a.m. on Sept. 29, 2022, police and paramedics were called to a home in the southeast community of Midnapore after a 911 call was made about a toddler in medical distress.

Paramedics tried to save her life en route to hospital but Olivia was declared dead.

Police initially labelled the child's death as suspicious.

Campbell was arrested 19 months after the homicide. He will be back in court next month.
