Geography: Calgary's hidden puppet master

Good morning Calgary! It's 4 C and partly cloudy in the city at 8:15 a.m. Here's what you need to know as you head out the door on this Thursday morning.

Weather

It's shaping up to be a fantastic spring day here in the city of Calgary. Temperatures will climb into the double-digits today with a high of 16 C expected (the normal daytime high for this time of year is 7 C.) It will be a windy one, however, as we're expecting winds out of the west at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h. The double-digit highs continue into the weekend, with a high of 19 C in the forecast for tomorrow and 10 C in the forecast for Saturday.

News headlines

Here's what the CBC Calgary newsroom is working on this morning:

Alberta's provincial budget will be released today, and it's expected to be one of the most important budgets in recent memory. Premier Jim Prentice and Finance Minister Robin Campbell have both hinted at "critical changes" in the wake of low oil prices and declining revenues. CBC will have full coverage of the budget throughout the day — we'll carry the budget address live on CBC Radio One and online at cbc.ca/calgary beginning at 3 p.m. MT.

The search for a young Calgary man has ended in tragedy. The family of Justin McKinnon-Blomme has confirmed that a man found dead in the backyard of a home in Acadia was the missing 21-year-old. Investigators do not believe the death is suspicious.

Despite another late push, the Calgary Flames couldn't grind out a win last night against the Dallas Stars, falling 4-3 in a shootout loss at the Saddledome. Defenceman Deryk Engelland was the surprise of the game for the Flames, scoring his first two goals of the season in the losing effort. The Flames did pick up a single point in the standings last night, which puts them in sole possession of third place in the NHL's Pacific Division.
